February Book Choice

With great consideration i am pleased to announce our February book choice is " The fault in Our Stars" by John Green. The Fault in Our Stars is the fourth solo novel by author John Green, published in January 2012. The story is narrated by a sixteen-year-old cancer patient named Hazel, who is forced by her parents to attend a support group, where she subsequently meets and falls in love with the seventeen-year-old Augustus Waters, an ex-basketball player and amputee. This may be a quite difficult and heartbreaking story to read, which will make for great discussion and analysis. I have ordered the books in, so will be issuing them in our January meeting. -Carey

"The Cuckoo's Calling" Book Review by Yeovil College Book Club

The Cuckoo's Calling is a 2013 crime fiction novel by J.K Rowling published under the pseudonym "Robert Galbraith". Cormoran Strike, private investigator, is hired by John Bristow, the adopted brother of famous supermodel Lula Laundry. Bristow wants Strike to investigate his sister's supposed suicide. Sceptical at first, Strike then finds himself indulged in the investigation, which keeps readers guessing at every turn, and with each character providing motive to kill, the list becomes a long one; Who could have wanted Lula dead? Guy Some: Famous fashion designer to whom Lula was a muse; Kieran Kovolas-Jones : The wannabe star and Lula's favourite driver; Either one of the Bestigus : The power/money mad couple living just below Lula; Tony Laundry : Uncle and resident Mr Nasty or; Evan Duffield : Loser addict-but-famous boyfriend.  Rowling does a fantastic job of introducing characters throughout-which was just enough to keep me guessing. Intricate i

Norwegian Wood and The Catcher in the Rye Synopsis

Norwegian Wood is a 1987 novel by Japanese author Haruki Murakami . The novel is a nostalgic story of loss and sexuality. The story's protagonist and narrator is Toru Watanabe, who looks back on his days as a college student living in Tokyo . Through Toru's reminiscences we see him develop relationships with two very different women — the beautiful yet emotionally troubled Naoko, and the outgoing, lively Midori. The novel is set in Tokyo during the late 1960s, a time when Japanese students, like those of many other nations, were protesting against the established order. While it serves as the backdrop against which the events of the novel unfold, Murakami (through the eyes of Toru and Midori) portrays the student movement as largely weak-willed and hypocritical . Murakami adapted the first section of the novel from an earlier short story, "Firefly". The story was subsequently included in the collection Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman .   http://en.w

November Book Club Meeting

"And The Mountains Echoed" book review by the Yeovil Reading Room Book Club

"And the Mountains Echoed" by Khaled Hosseini, is a story of how families love, betray, honour and make sacrifices for each other. It reads like a collection of interconnected short stories with each character having a connection with the others. Although sometimes Hosseini doesn't give you much time to catch your breath and make sense of who is who in some of the stories (before you are propelled into another), this can sometimes be forgiven for such lines like; "I suspect the truth is that we are waiting, all of us, against insurmountable odds, for something extraordinary to happen to us." Hosseini himself has described the novel as more global and less "afghan centric" than his previous books; the characters are all impacted by the events in Afghanistan (the history of the country is less central to this novel), which is more about family, morals and the love between siblings. The story is set in the present day and some of the stories bar

Book Club

Thanks to everyone that came yesterday to the book club, it was great to meet our newest members Autumn and David.  We all had lots to say about "And the mountains echoed" (all of which will be summarised and posted in due-course). The month has past so quickly! So onto the next book we go; "The Cuckoo's Calling" by Robert Galbraith (also known as J K Rowling)  I cannot wait to get stuck in! -Carey

Change Of Date!

Due to student half term, the 29th October Book Club meeting has been changed to TUESDAY 22ND OCTOBER at 3.30pm.  The meeting will be held at Yeovil College again, most likely we will stay at the College until we have more people join from the UCY and Yeovil Library.  Hope everyone is enjoying "And The Mountains Echoed" ?!  See you very soon -Carey

Book club

Thanks to those who came today for our first ever book club! It was so nice to meet you all and I'm excited to get started!  Read till' your heart's content! - Carey
If you were going to write a book, what genre would you write?  I would like to think I would go for a romance but i would quite like a go at fantasy or sci-fi..unfortunately my writing skills aren't quite up to par with Rowling's so I think i'll stick to reading!  - Carey
"I invent nothing. I rediscover."  - August Rodin I think this applies to books in that there are only so many plots in the world. However authors twist the plot and add new characters and new settings, it is extremely rare to read a book with a completely new and original plot. Regardless, most of those stories are still amazing anyways.  Do you have a favourite plot-type? (such as coming-of-age or hero's journey, for example?)  - Carey
Do you ever have books that you are reading that you don't want to let other people know you are reading? And contrarily are there ever books you especially want people to notice that you're reading? I know we all love to read everything we do, but there are times that we just have a book in front of us that people might notice. Which books make you sit up a little taller, and which books makes you hide the cover of? - Carey

A quote from one of my all time favourite books - A Million LittlePieces - written beautifully by James Frey. What's your favouritebook/quote? - Carey Frey, J. 2003. A million little pieces. New York: N.A. Talese/Doubleday.
